SEO or Search Engine Optimisation can sound like a super-complicated topic if you’re not aware of what it is and you’re not in the digital marketing world. But honestly? It’s not as complicated as you might think. SEO ultimately is all about tailoring your website content and design to suit the search engine’s criteria AKA Google. There are other search engines available. However, Google is a key player in the internet game. You want to carry out SEO so your website shows up on Google. The ultimate goal of Search Engine Optimisation is to have your content come up on the first page of Google when a user types in a query. This, in turn, enables you to receive more website traffic, leads and if you’ve got an online store, customers and sales.
Wait, so my website isn’t automatically put on Google as soon as I set it up?
Correct. Although Google is trying to add a large chunk of the internet to its index, it’s a big task that is taking longer than expected as the internet exploded and continues to grow massively every single day. The way in which Google adds sites is a little complicated to explain. However, in simple terms it uses “Spiders” These spiders crawl the web. Their goal is to discover new pages. Once new pages are found Google then automatically decides whether they’re good enough to be approved. This is where SEO massively comes in. If you are carrying out good Search Engine Optimisation and following Google’s guidelines, your content will be indexed. Not only that, it may even appear high up leading to your site becoming visible to thousands of people.
Why do I need to carry out SEO?
SEO is key for anyone with a website as it can lead to so many opportunities for your online space and if you have one, your money-making business. Now you might be thinking “Well I’ve never done any of this Search Engine Optimisation malarky and I still receive traffic from Google!” Well here’s the thing, you have, you’ve just done so without even realising it.
Search Engine Optimisation is a complex topic but that doesn’t mean that you can’t learn
Many people think that SEO is a big scary topic that is super complicated and confusing. While the topic is very complex, the basic gist of it isn’t difficult to grasp or implement. Although, the big agencies would like you to think otherwise. The big problem with SEO is that it is such a vast subject. It’s complex and time-consuming. To learn the ins and outs you need two things, the passion to educate yourself on the topic and time. If you’re running a business full time or a website as a side hustle the chances are you don’t have much time on your hands. That combined with the fact that the topic of Search Engine Optimisation is so big can cause many to become overwhelmed.
The thing is, although some areas of SEO can be quite technical, a lot of it can be done simply by adding to your content. It’s making tweaks and improvements. As I’ve said, SEO is a really vast topic but you don’t need to be doing it all at once. Even if you implement a few small changes bit by bit your website can massively reap the rewards. Just remember, Search Engine Optimisation is a huge learning curve. There’s so much to learn about the topic. So if you feel overwhelmed, fear not. You don’t need to know everything right now. There’s always time to learn. Even the big experts are still learning new things daily.
The internet is packed full of information on the topic
When it comes to education, there are various courses available on the topic. However, the internet is full of free advice as well as tips and tricks on how to do SEO. The only thing to be aware of? There’s a lot of misinformation online. One of the big SEO myths is that SEO techniques stay the same. Search Engine Optimisation is an ever-changing topic. What might work today may not work next year. It’s really a topic you need to be in the loop with. It’s also worth noting that older content in both books and online can often become useless with time due to the constant change in algorithms.
My advice? Take notice of what Google themselves publish. Now Google doesn’t tell you exactly everything in regards to their algorithm. However, they do publish some information so take note of this. Another piece of advice? Take note of what the trusted big players in SEO and the experts are saying. There’s no denying that SEO is powerful and if you are serious about creating a killer website that is going to be super successful then you need to be on the ball. Struggling for time? There are plenty of people out there to can help who are up to scratch with all the latest knowledge. Haven’t really got the budget? Spend some time learning about the topic yourself and give it a try. Trust me, if you nail it, the results are certainly worth it.
